Commodore Bellona de Nemaine, Knight of the Golden Wyvern and Paramour of Tyraxis
Appearance: Bellona is a naval professional, and strives to look the part. Her uniforms are kept crisp and well-maintained, with short, unobtrusive hair. She does keep the odd custom of bleaching her hair regularly, and when asked about, never quite gets around to saying why or when she started.
Biography: Bellona was a baron’s third child, not eligible to inherit any sort of title and unlikely to make a good match for herself. So she took what she did have: a noble education, a head for numbers, and a remarkable sense of direction, and applied for the Imperial Naval Academy of Alendron. She passed the test with flying colors, this translated into her academic performance. While she was still studying, the war with Rjillund broke out, however, and she was given a quick graduation and promotion to acting Lieutenant with a few other promising students. Despite the rush, she excelled in the field, receiving several commendations from her superiors.
It was during this middle period of the war that she met Duke Iudicael IV Cadeyrn of Tyraxis, then just the commander of a hussar unit. Her ship was involved in a joint operation with his unit, and it was during the week or so he spent aboard that they became fast friends, and subsequently correspondents. They met in person again a year later in an occupied port, and became involved with one another, with her officially becoming his paramour a few months later.
In the war’s last disastrous naval push, Bellona was forced to take command of her ship, the Zephyr, after her captain and first officer were incapacitated. She performed admirably, and managed to save several nearby ships from destruction, and helped lead the survivors of the Alendronian fleet out of the Rjillish trap. She was awarded her knighthood and membership in the Order of the Golden Wyvern for this, along with a permanent and official promotion to captain.
Post-war, Bellona was promoted to commodore, given the sudden dearth of officers, and is one of the navy’s rising stars.
Personality: Bellona is direct and professional, as is generally expected of naval officers, but can’t resist a laconic quip or two when the opportunity presents itself. In private, Bellona the officer gives way to Bellona the socialite: despite her lower noble birth, she manages to stay up-to-date on the news and trends of Alendron, and chats with the best. Politically, though, she is very similar to her paramour: she believes that Alendron must renew its strength, on land and at sea, to restore and enforce its proper place in the world, and is working with him towards that.
Skills: Bellona is an exceptionally skilled sailor, navigator, and commander, as befits a top graduate of the academy and war hero, but that doesn’t completely define her. In her youth, she trained in fencing, and can still defend herself quite well with a sword. She also trained as an accountant for her “trade,” she is very out of practice with those sorts of numbers. Additionally, during the lonely nights at sea, she’s taken to writing amateur poetry (but has never shown or told anyone).
