Elric Aquitane Duke of Aquitania "There is only one thing with the power to move nations... and that is wealth." Born as the only child to the previous Duke of Aquitane, Elric was bred and raised to become everything his father was, and more. Namely, he was taught to rule and make money through both legitimate and illegitimate means. However, as he grew older, he recognized a glaring weakness in the duchy - their dependence on the Crown of Valdez for protection against invaders. Their wealth was great, and coveted by many, after all. His father, however, was a religious man, and faithful to their rulers, thus rejecting Elric's suggestions for a consolidated military and external treaties. Elric was furious, how could his father put such blind faith into the crown?
Soon after this exchange, however, his father mysteriously took ill. He died soon after and Elric took his place as duke. Almost immediately, he put in place military reforms, organizing and training the what few soldiers he had at his disposal into a force to be reckoned with, despite their small numbers. Knowing his own weaknesses, he employed great tacticians and strategists to teach him the intricacies of command.
Strengthening the military allowed him to further expand both his wealth and his domain. As the world watched the Galathion-Cassian war and the Duchy of Castille's aggressive moves against their neighbors, Elric quietly occupied and oppressed minor provinces located near his domain. The conquered dukes were allowed to keep their land, but had to pledge their allegiance to Aquitania and pay a small amount of tax.
Further extending his political power, he agreed to betroth his oldest daughter to the Duke of Castille, Hedraeth Carraigh, and enter a formal alliance with the other duchy. PersonalityElric is an dedicated, but ruthless, man. Everything he does is to accomplish one objective: to gain wealth and power for the Duchy of Aquitania. Due to his upbringing, he is arguably the least religious of the Valdez dukes, although he keeps up the appearance of being at least moderately religious to avoid sparking conflict with the other duchies.
He is incredibly well learned in the arts of economics, having published several treatises on the merits of subjects like trade and the different types of economies a nation can have. In addition, he was tutored in both the theory and arts of war, although he has never had the chance to put his knowledge and skills to the test.
