Carline Bruya (formerly Cheroline Sourcille)
Biography: Carline was born the second of the three daughters of the reigning Sourcille Duke of the Honey Islands in pre-revolutionary Routaille. Carline, however, was never her parent’s focus: that was her elder sister Reganne. Without oversight, Carline became socially adventurous, first in the family seat of Catogrie, and when she was old enough, in Imrena. She became a fixture of the noble social scene, but couldn’t help but notice what their idle pleasures were built on the back of: the enforced servitude of the lesser Routais and especially Tlem.
Given her status, Carline did her best to alieve their suffering with charity, but this only showed her how much Routaille’s society was rigged against the lower orders: she could put on a fine show for her wealthy friends, but not really change anything. This became worse when Reganne became Duchess. Reganne’s brutality shocked Carline, and she decided to do more, from secretly paying off Tlem taxes to hiding dissidents in her Imrena estate. When the Revolution did come to the Honey Islands, she handed over all Sourcille property in the city, and fed the rebels the information they’d need to capture it.
She was still a Sourcille, though, and was forced into hiding, from her sister’s remaining loyalists and from the most vengeful of her former subjects. She moved from place to place until the new government stabilized, and old friends in Imrena invited her back with an opportunity: putting her old social skills to use for the newly formed courtesan’s guild, disguised and with a new name. Carline had garnered a bit of a reputation in her days as a socialite, but, frankly, was happy to but those skills to use making the people of Routaille just a little bit happier.
It came with a second opportunity too: the new authorities were concerned about attempts to use the Honey Islands as possible vector for counter-revolution, and they offered her a further layer of protection (along with a discrete pardon), in exchange for her services as an informant.
Personality: Carline is charismatic, generous, and more than a little flirty, but under the act she puts on for others is a shrewd mind. She saw the unsustainability and injustice of Old Routaille and did her best to fight it, all while not being caught. She can discuss anything with her clients from the going-ons of the world to local gossip and which horse they should bet on. She makes herself what people want to see, and what will benefit those she cares about most.
Skills: Carline is an expert in fashion and cosmetics, and keeps physically fit and skilled. She also makes it her business to stay well-informed on events in Routaille and Trevast, both for conversation and curiosity’s sake. Conversation, indeed, is her other main skill: she can keep almost anyone going for hours.
Appearance: Carline is an example of classical Routais beauty, though this is enhanced with cosmetics, a well-chosen wardrobe, and proper lighting. However, she also has to take great pains to hide her family looks: the Sourcille raven hair, pale complexation, and shortness with dyes, more specialized cosmetics, and custom height-increasing shoes.
