A Brief History
The history of Talcary is tied up with the Empire. Originally a colonial settlement, the land was once known as the province of Chouria. The name changed over the years after the empire collapsed, the people coming to name themselves after the Talce Plains that dominated the northern part of the province. From the start, they were set against their peers. The collapse of the empire lead to a flood of barbarians overtaking the surrounding provinces, leaving Talcary an island of Imperial influence in a sea of foreigners.
Worse yet were the imperial ambitions of the Galathions in Alendron. They sought to conquer Talcary, and subjugate them to their will, destroying their identity in the process. The Talcear were not willing to give up so easily. When the Galathion invasion came, they made the enemy pay in so much blood that the forces of Alendron were forced to retreat.
The wars did not cease, and with each continuing war, the people of Talcary grew more harsh and brutal. The Alendronians responding by isolating their southern neighbour from the rest of the continent, forcing them to become a hard-nosed people who had to wrench everything they could out of the land.
For the next millenia, Talcary fought against their northern neighbours and at times, their southern neighbours too. There were times when Talcary lost land, but it always managed to retake whatever Alendron took from it. In fact, they managed to impale two of the kingdom’s rulers. The brutality of their rivalry with Alendron continues to this day, although they are currently in a peaceful phase.
Worse yet, the resurgent Empire of Izhen
Still, the Talcear watch the Alendronians with interest. Following their 15 year war, Talcary’s most hated enemy is looking quite weak.
Army
Talcary’s army has specifically developed in a way so as to counter Alendron’s forces. Thus they are largely dedicated to skirmishing, with horse archers bred to fire and retreat while setting up longbowmen to counter the Alendronian horse archers. These are supported by ranks of halberdiers meant to weaken the enemy hussar charges. They do have more heavy troopers, namely bardiche troopers meant to hack and hew the heavily armoured Alendronian soldiers, though they tend to only be deployed when Talcary goes on the offensive.
Navy
The Talcear Navy is not the equal of Alendron, but it has been made to try and counter it. It is comprised of smaller, faster ships meant to speed around the larger Alendronian ships and pepper them with bolts from afar. Compounding their strengths are the infamous Talcear “iron urchin”, which are metal balls with spikes deployed into the waters around Talcary meant to drag on the bottoms of the hulls of those who do not have maps to know where they have been placed.
