Culture
The people of Weiandel are notorious for their conservatism, even in a nation of conservatives. They are a notoriously hard-nosed, pious people who cling to superstition and tradition with a vigour that many find alarming. Everything has a specific place within the world, and to disrupt that is to threaten the natural order of things. The people there are slow to accept change and introducing new technology into the area has historically been a hassle. Women are explicitly subservient to men, expected to defer to their husbands and produce as many children as possible. Those women who do not have the power to protect themselves but still look to stand out are instead shunned and mistreated.
The nobility is also notoriously restrictive. Peasants are not allowed to look directly at their noble betters on pain of 100 lashes, and may never stand taller than their superiors. The nobles only allow men to inherit, which has historically been a problem for them. They are incredibly insistent on ceremony and ridiculous shows of fealty. They cling to their traditions tightly, and tolerate no signs of dissent from the common masses.
The economy is tightly controlled by the nobles, and morality is a constant concern within the Durreich. There is an official position, run by the church, meant to root out deviant morality. Ever since the Revolution in Routaille, however, the nobility had become more fearful and now often do not leave their homes without at least a few guards to protect them.
Recent History
Weiandel has recently had troubles. The former Dugraf, Teudoreik was slain in battle with the Alendronians. This would have not necessarily have been a problem, since he had 5 sons, but they also died, four in battle and one from dysentery. In most of Rjillund, this would be a tragedy, but not a problem as Teudoreik had a daughter, Jokasta. Unfortunately, Weiandel is exceptionally conservative and doesn’t allow women to inherit unless all men within the house are dead.
Now, at first it seemed like all men from Hotans had indeed perished, even cousins and such, but so desperate were the nobility of Weiandel to not have a woman rule them that they pored over every possible family tree. After much searching, they finally found it – a fifth cousin of Teudoreik, and one of the few remaining Hotans men. His name was Elereik, a perfectly eligible heir for the position of Dugraf. A shame, then, that he was an actual infant living in another Durreich. It took some finagling, and they were able to transport this baby and have him crowned right away, leaving young Jokasta quite bitter.
These days, Weiandel is ruled by Elereik Hotans and his regency council, made up of knights, nobles and priests while Jokasta desperately tries to keep the madness of the Durreich in check.
