Culture: Caer Alriad was once like the other Salkan realms: small, traditional, and isolated, but with the coming of the Vyres, everything changed. They saw how the Luskan merchants were building their ports and moving in on their cousins, so they decided to take action: not with arms, through imitation. The Salkans of Alriad learned all they could about commerce from the Luskans, and, slowly but surely, built a new kind of society around it, but one that remained distinctively Salkan.
History: Alriad was first founded as a fishing village, but the settlers quickly discovered that the harbor had far more uses: it was deep, wide, and well-protected from the elements. Soon, small scale trade began to radiate from the small hub. Over a few decades, Alriad grew from village to town, and became greatly desired by the local Salkan princes. After a series of wars against his rivals and then a siege of Alriad itself, this struggle was won by Caer Alriad’s first Prince: Iestyn the Bloody.
The realm Iestyn built would endure for centuries, even in the face of Imperial conquest and rule of the Vyres over Salka. Indeed, the House of Iestyn’s deal with the Empire made their position far more stable than it had been before, letting them invest in the growth of their capital. The Iestyns took not on the stability given to them by the Luskans, but the lessons they had to teach: they invited Luskan traders to Alriad not to set up shop, but to teach their own people how to expand, and they learned all too well. Alriad became a wealthy port in the vein of the other Luskan baronies, but remained largely under local, Salkan control.
Today, the House’s Prince is the ancient and venerable Aonghus ap Iestyn, an important player in Luskan trade and politics. He hasn’t lost any of his shrewdness with age, but the succession is the issue on the mind of most of his court. The official heir is his only legitimate child, Lady Sionna, supported by the Princess-consort Calliech. However, Aonghus’s half-Luskan bastard son, a decade older than his sister, has returned from his journeys across the sea, and has impressed a number of the local nobles with his talent. Aonghus has made no official or definitive declaration, and many worry for the principality’s future.
